Learning Beyond Academic Walls: Tourism & Hospitality Management Department Explores Cebu!

October 30, 2018

Fostering holistic student development entails more than the traditional teaching methods used inside school premises. It requires going beyond limits – learning beyond academic walls.

Last October 23-26, STI College – General Santos sent over 117 students from the Tourism & Hospitality Management (THM) Department to the Queen City of the South, for an Educational Tour.

With the primary objectives of reinforcing lessons in the classroom setting, and honing the intellectual, cultural, and social skills of the students, the Educational Tour activities included lecture-seminars, city tours, buffets, and a culmination night.

For the lecture-seminars, the students had separate sessions in accordance with their respective disciplines. While Tourism Management students had a lecture on Flight Operations and Airline Management with the Cebu Pacific Personnel, the Hotel and Restaurant Management students had a Mactan Island Discovery Tour with Gardenia Bakeries Philippines.

The students were, then, brought together for a lecture on Personality Development and Latest Trends in Tourism and Hospitality Industry, including an overview on Tour Guiding and Travel Agency Services.

Upping the active learning experience as the students carried on with the Educational Tour meant going outdoors and doing immersions. They did a Visit, Learn, and Dine activity in prominent hotels and resorts in the city, including JPark Island Resort, Shangri-la’s Mactan Resort and Spa, Waterpark, and Waterfront Hotel and Casino, wherein the students enjoyed buffets, and witnessed and learned how these hotels and resorts work on their operations on a daily basis.

Tantamount to knowing tips and trends in Tourism and Hospitality Industry is knowing histories that make something significant. The students learned the history of Cebu – and Philippines in general – through their City Tour and Mactan Island Tour. They visited tourist spots like Magellan’s Cross, Basilica de Sto. Niño, Cebu Heritage, Pedro Calungsod, and journeyed around Mactan Shrine, Lapu-lapu Monument, and 10,000 Roses.

The Educational tour concluded with a Socialization Night at Alta Cebu Garden Resort.
STI College – General Santos remains steadfast in its promise of providing quality Real Life Education as it continues to step up its mold in setting standards through capacitating learning opportunities for its students.
